Usually axe, spears and hammers. Spears are good at reaching the important bits of large fleshy beasts, and ok at penetrating armour (favourable force:contact area). Not so good against solid inorganic monsters, not the quickest at defeating lightly armoured opponents. Overall, my preferred weapons are mining picks.

Even if made from subpar metal, artifacts tend to be better due to their artifact bonuses, the exceptions being things like bone spears or silver swords.

The simplest way I know to get the happy thoughts is to use a pond designation above the dining hall, have the water fall to a level below the dining hall, and have a small and accessible catchment area below set as a water source. Dwarves take water from the bottom with buckets, dump it from the top, and repeat.
