Baitfish. We went out salmon fishing on Lake Michigan last night. We saw hardly anything on the locator. We figured at this time of year that the salmon would be in close as they get ready for staging up the river. So we fished in 40 to 60 ft of water assuming we would find things but we found hardly anything at all.Waning Crescent. Fishing continues to be excellent out of Port Washington! Fished the Oconto river for the first time 7.23.23 in the afternoon. I put in at the Hi Seas boat launch and fished up to Holtwood park in town. Caught a bunch of small perch, rockbass, and smallmouth with only one 12" smallie and one 15.5" smallie. Mostly threw jerkbaits targeting deep pockets/breaks with submerged structure.
Waning Gibbous. We've caught many sturgeon over the years on the Menominee up near the dam. Use heavy tackle as some of these fish can exceed 60" and 100lbs. My preferred rig is a 7' medium-heavy rod rigged with 65lb braided line and a 12'-18" leader of 80lb mono with a 6/0 or 7/0 circle hook.

7/18/23 @ 5:17 PM. Can somebody tell me how the fishing is going on Poygan. I have a place in Pine River that I use for a cabin but I haven’t fished down there for years. I got the grandkids coming down and I plan on pulling some boards. I am putting in west side and don’t care if we catch Sheep’s, whites or walleye.
Water: 44°. Humps. Fished pool 9 from the dam down to Blackhawk park from 4/20 - 4/24. Very difficult with so much water and fast current. Had some success with the walleyes when we found some protected water with slower current. Saturday evening catfishing for the first time this year, ended up with two catfish and two dandy largemouth on cut bait. Caught the first catfish on my ultralight trying to catch bait which took what felt like on hour.
Biggest smallmouth was 12 inches. Caught one legal walleye and one under size. Biggest fish was a sheephead. Gills were caught mostly on gulp and red worms. Catfish were caught on minnows, gulp, and worms. No surprise there. Walleyes and smallies caught on crappie minnows. So many snags up here makes fishing very frustrating with the biggest ... A lot of other fish were biting, too. We did find some catfish with cutbait. A sheephead swallowed the hook (go figure) so we kept it and cut it up.
