When they added the golem jewels they received by far the biggest buff. It kinda goes with elemental damage in the game, fire seems the strongest. The main reason is that chaos golem's aoe seems to have been heavily nerfed in the current version of the game and it is really clunky to use for map clearing.

Just use zombies/spectres or any good selfcast spell (bv should be fine with 4 golems and heralds) until you get jewels. Clayshapers aren't so rare.
