Personally, all my normal dwarves have a 3x4 living space, and I have never had any sort of unhappiness issues. I can confirm this, except that I use a 3x3 design (bed, table, chair, cabinet and if I ever get around to it, also a chest), and that makes all dwarfs as happy as unicorns in a magical forest.
