flintlock62 · #7 · Jan 1, 2015. HST's seem to be one of the top choices. I haven't seen HST's at my LGS, so I'll stick with PDX1, or my Gold Dot hand loads until then. I do believe that GD, PDX1, or HST will be pretty much close. Any one of these are acceptable if the other isn't available.

The HST's are supposed to be more effective, and sometimes even less expensive. If you are looking at something that is marketed as just a hollow point, it probably is not a high quality self defense round.Apparently the Hydra Shok was the best thing since sliced bread back in the 80's. Since then there have been advancements in hollow point design and construction. Better designed bullets are the Federal Tactical HST and Bonded, Winchester Ranger T-Series, Speer Gold Dots, and Remington Golden Sabers.
Federal HST are not to be confused with Hydra-Shok rounds that actually don't expand consistently. The main difference between the two is that the bullet designs are totally different.
