I prefer the tactical axe in general, but the knife especially with lacerate can be a more consistant source of crit procs. For your axe, replace melee damage with 5% Crit chance (you need it as high as possible for consistant Faith Restored procs even if it has high uptime without during big hordes), and replace decimator with the highest tier of Brutal Momentum you have. The MK IV special has 3 hits in the chain. Best elite tac axe. MK VII is a mix of the two and has more complicated combo chains that have to switch attacks a lot to (light → combo → light → heavy → combo etc.), it is an all-round axe that is tricky to use but might be the best when mastered. The MK VII special has 2 hits in the chain.

Check your different attacks against flak ennemies & elites, and see how many attacks you need to kill them or almost kill them. That axe is imo one of the most satisfying melee weapons to use, clears the chaff in one swipe and handles hordes and specials. I switched out the bolter for the flamer since axe makes good work of armoured specials and the flamer is really good for gaining control of situation, especially ones that have gone bad, which is very handy in damnation.It has a high stagger value while being extremely fast. You can stun any human-sized enemy with it, including Maulers and even Ragers, knocking them out of their attack chain, or you can stop gunners/trappers/bombers from repositioning. You basically trade dmg for defence (%75dmg reduction from crits is the best "toughness ability" for zealot) and bleed stacks if you use the tactical axe.
