The movement of a rover is not smooth, upon pushing forward the rover will 'kick' in sorts and the drill heads will move up and down slightly which if still drilling (which you are likely doing) will change what part of the planet you have now removed. The Emerson Drilling rig is a slow but steady platform for deep core drilling. Survival ready, but only for Earth like planets as there's no ventilation. Then you may find drills dig below wheel/ground level, wheel dives off, mining rig goes nose down and it can be a PITA to get back to good'ol horizontal. So figuring out best combination of drill height, and maybe rotors to give better control. Or possibly go slow enough that the drills clear a little larger path (or use right-click drilling which has a larger radius). The wiki states 1.9m radius cutout for large grid and 1.3m radius for small grid. That means in theory each LG drill clears a 1.5 block diameter and each SG drill clears a 5.2 block diameter. I'm actually really surprised it works so well. There are some issues with the pistons if you don't treat them gently enough in transport. But the drill operation works great even in multiplayer. I saw your builds and you also are a fan of pistons and complex systems.

Retract "bolt" while it welds another round of conveyors, then push the conveyors and drill forward (down) with the bolt. I've been working on a drill rig and I built it drill rotor then piston, where I had previously built it piston rotor then drill. If your in survival you may need to do some wired merging. I find that the piston head doesn't like having a rotor on it, but works fine when the rotor is attached to the piston base.
