On strength builds, the bastard sword actually reaches a higher AR than the claymore does, and you need 3 less dexterity to wield it. It gets an A scaling while the claymore gets a B. A whopping 18, yes, but it is more. The real benefit comes from the lower base damage, but higher strength scaling.
