Like most of Illinois, very little of Midewin consists of natural tallgrass prairie anymore. Scattered remnants, totaling less than 200 acres, or 3% of Midewin’s acreage, is all that is left. To restore the remainder of Midewin’s nearly 20,000 acres to tallgrass prairie and other native habitats will take considerable time and plant materials.
The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas encompasses nearly 11,000 acres and is located in the heart of the Flint Hills–the largest expanse of tallgrass prairie left in North America. We visited the Tallgrass National Prairie Reserve on a whim. With family in from out of town, we wanted to go for a walk and seen some wild bison. The drive from Wichita was just over an hour via I-35 then Cottonwood Falls and Strong City.
