The lordvessel souls were chosen by gwyndolin to choose an undead. To link the fire you would need the souls of nito, the witch of izalith, manus and gwyn. The souls of seath and the four kings are collected to complete the soul of gwyn because it was split.

To open the other areas completely you have to place it at the Firelink Altar. For Archives and Izalith (not Demon Ruins, though the Firesage is behind the gold door), you have to place the lordvessel just to access the area. Ok thanks so much.
